Assessment

Assessment is the purposeful, systematic and ongoing collection of information for use in making judgments about a student’s demonstration of what they have learnt. It is an integral part of the teaching/learning cycle. As teachers plan learning experiences, they also plan how they will monitor student’s progress and learning outcomes.

As well as assessment linked to individual class programs, all students undertake standardised testing as outlined in the Dili International School Assessment and Reporting Guidelines. This practice is consistent with that currently undertaken in Australian states. These tests aim to provide stakeholders with valid and reliable information about students.

Assessment at Dili International School involves the use of a comprehensive range of techniques and tools that enable students multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning outcomes within a range of situations in order to accommodate different learning styles and ‘intelligences’.

Assessment tasks match the learning experiences and teaching methods used, and where possible reflect real life situations. This fair and equitable assessment is based on principles of social justice. It allows students to demonstrate learning outcomes in ways which are sensitive to and inclusive of their circumstances as a learner.

Assessment tasks take into account students learning styles, culture, ethnicity, abilities, impairments, gender, age, socio-economic status and linguistic backgrounds. Students may be provided Assessment Matrices prior to assessable tasks in some LAs.

Self evaluation enables students to reflect upon their work behaviours, learning styles, application of strategies and learning outcomes. It encourages students to set goals, implement plans and track their progress towards particular outcomes.

Self evaluation provides students the opportunity to understand how they learn and a shared language that can be used to change and shape future learning and meta-cognition.
